When to go: The southern Gulf Islands are a year round destination though June through early October is the dry warm season. Noteworthy events include Salt Spring Island's Saturday Market from April through October where local artists and farmers sell organic food fine woodwork pottery crafts and jewelry August's Galiano wine Festival and on the third weekend of September the classic Salt Spring Annual Fall Fair which has celebrated the harvest since 1896 with traditional favorites like fresh pressed apple juice lives tock competitions and an apple sting contest. How to get around: Take a BC Ferry from Vancouver Island or the mainland to bigger islands (Galiano Mayne Pender Salt Spring and Saturna) and a private boat or floatplane to smaller islands. Through not technically a Gulf Island is close enough to Vancouver that many residents commute downtown via ferry. On the smaller Gulf Islands it' s easy to walk or bike wherever you want to go. On Salt Spring the largest and most visid of the southern Gulf Islands rent a car or use public transit.

When to go: June and July are best for fishing but high season for mosquitoes and black flies. July and August are the warmest most popular months. Visitor numbers are regulated so you can arrive during peak season and still have a wonderful wilderness experience says Debbie Mark of Seagull Outfitters. The fall foiage is spectacular in Stember with minimal bugs but colder temperatures. Park services and outfitter shops close for the season in September so self guided travel isn't recommended in winter since emergency help and essential services aren't available. How to get around: Dawson Trail the most popular entry point is located just off Highway 11 on French Lake 30 miles east of the town of Atikokan. Outfitters run shuttle services from Thunder Bay's airport. There are also fly in canoe options to designated areas. When to go : As with most parks in Canada Prince Albert is busiest in the summer months of June to August. Catch the forest's fall colors in September when the crowds thin and the weather is still mild. One of my favorite spots is the 5.2 mile Spruce River Highlands Trail says park interpreter Bradley Muir. It' s one of the only places where you can get above the trees to see the crowns of the hills and surrounding panoramas which play best in the fall. Golden aspen leaves on the crowns orange and gold tamaracks in the lowlands it really reflects one of the core messages of the park which is the transition from south to north. The park welcome cross country skiers lake skaters backcountry snowshoeing and ice fishermen in winter although accommodation and amenities are limited.

How to get around: Prince Albert contains extensive hiking trails for all levels although you might prefer a guided horseback and wagon ride with an operator such as Sturgeon River Ranch. Horses allow you to cover more ground and the Sturgeon River guides are experts at tracking the elusive bison which typically graze in remote meadows buffered by thick woods. Traveling single file on horseback is the best way to navigate through the brambles mud and other obstacles and venturing into the backcountry increases the likelihood of seeing moose mule deer and black bears.
